Sailing on a Spanish Galleon
XMI had the privilege of sailing on waters between the California coast and the Channels Islands on a replica of the Spanish galleon known as the San Salvador. We were also given the experience of joining the crew to hoist the sails. The ship was built through maritime archaeological research and reconstructed based on the findings. The original San Salvador under the command of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, arrived at the port we now call San Diego in southern California, USA on September 28, 1542, before proceeding further north in search of new trade routes that would link Mexico to Asia and Europe. She was the first recorded European vessel to sail along Southern California, and survey its coastline. (SD Maritime Museum)
