Modern Pagodas of Angkor
Angkor is famous for its temple ruins which echo Cambodia’s ancient past. Tourists and pilgrims from across the globe venture to visit this designated UNESCO World Heritage Site to walk the hallowed grounds of these architectural masterpieces built by the Khmer Empire. Though the Khmer civilization of old may no longer exist, there remains a living cultural heritage in the lives and practices of its modern residents. Today’s Khmer people place high value on their religious rituals and customs. This may be seen in their pilgrimages to prayer alters throughout Angkor, including contemporary Buddhist pagodas which were built within the last two centuries. These have helped alleviate some of the pressures from the ancient temples.
