Painted Rock of Carrizo
Painted Rock is a large alcove sandstone formation that Native Americans used as an ancient campsite. They began painting sacred images, known as pictographs, within the rock shelter between 3-4,000 years ago. The site was heavily vandalized over the last century and sadly sustained significant damage. Today Painted Rock is located within the Carrizo Plain National Monument. Protections are in place, and the site provides an educational tool to show visitors the importance of protection and preservation.
