Banteay Srei Temple
Banteay Srei has been spelled as Banteay Srey and Banteay Sri, meaning citadel of women or citadel of beauty. The temple also has various nicknames including the jewel of Khmer art, the lady temple, pink temple, tiny temple and women’s temple. All of these describe it well. It is one of the smallest temples at Angkor. It was primarily built with pinkish red sandstone. It feels feminine with its striking stonework. When discovered by the French in 1914, many of the structures lie in ruin. From 2002-2005 APSARA National Authority of Cambodia and the Swiss Government implemented a conservation program for Banteay Srei. The program further developed between 2007-2008 with continued reconstruction of the temple complex, the build of a visitor interpretation center and implementation of tourism management.
