USA: Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery
Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery encompasses more than 6 miles of shoreline on the central coast of California. The northern elephant seal, or Mirounga angustirostris, uses the rookery for birthing, breeding, molting, and rest from long migrations. Elephant seals, along with many marine mammals, were nearly wiped out by fur trade in the 17-1800s. Protections went into place in the 20th century which allowed many animals a chance at recovery. In 1992 the first elephant seal pup was born at Piedras Blancas; today more than 20,000 enjoy its waters and sandy shores. Thanks to protections, scientific research and dedicated conservation work, the northern elephant seal has a very bright future. XMI values our trips to the rookery, and hopes the photos promote the continued preservation of this very special place.
