Joshua Tree National Park, California
Joshua Tree National Park, located in south-western California, straddling the Mojave and Colorado deserts, is home to many unique flora and fauna. In the 1930s, Minerva Hoyt recognized, with the encroachment of humans, the fragility of this seemingly hardy landscape and its inhabitants. She petitioned President Franklin D. Roosevelt to designate it as a protected monument, and in 1936 he did. And in 1994 it was renamed to a National Park that includes over 792,000 acres. Today the Park faces complex and challenging issues that threaten its natural ecosystems and cultural resources. The National Park Service is using science as a means to improve its management, and the park is also a center for scientific research and inquiry.
