Death Valley National Park
Death Valley National Park is 3.4 million acres, making it the largest U.S. National Park outside Alaska. Over 90% of this area is officially designated as Wilderness. That wild land spans across eastern California and into Nevada. There are salt flats, craters, rugged mountains rising as much as 11,000 feet, deep and winding canyons, sand dunes and spring-fed oases with fish. Despite its name and extreme climate there is a great diversity of life. Death Valley is the hottest place on Earth, with a recorded temperature of 134° F (57°C) on July 10, 1913 so fieldwork needs to be planned in advance to prepare for extreme and changeable conditions.
